Library Scavenger Hunt

Ages 4–8LearningFree 1 hour

Free, air-conditioned, and secretly educational. The library is the most underrated playdate venue in America.

Make a list before you go: find a book with a red cover, a book about dinosaurs, the funniest title in the picture-book section, a book with your name in it. Ten items is plenty.

Split kids into pairs with one list per pair and a 20-minute timer. Librarians are almost always delighted by this — just keep voices at library level and you're golden.

End at the children's section for free reading time, then let each kid check out one book. The playdate ends with everyone holding something new, which feels like a prize.

This works brilliantly for the 'I don't know what my kid likes' phase. Watch what they gravitate toward and you'll learn more in an hour than in a month of guessing.
