What to Do When Kids Fight on a Playdate
August 26, 2026
Conflict is normal. Your reaction is the whole ballgame. A script for the toy-grab, the tears, and the aftermath.
First, the reframe: kids fighting on a playdate is not a failed playdate. It's kids practicing conflict with a safety net. Your job isn't preventing all fights — it's coaching through them.
The script: get low, name what you see ('You both want the truck'), and hand it back to them ('What's a fair way to share it?'). Then — this is the hard part — wait. Silence feels eternal but it's where they learn.
If someone's melting down, separate first and solve later. Snack, water, a quiet corner. Nobody negotiates well while crying, including adults.
Afterward, don't over-process it with the other parent unless someone got hurt. 'They worked it out!' with a smile is almost always the right debrief. Kids bounce back faster than our embarrassment does.
